Sharing BigQuery data through Analytics Hub

Analytics Hub is BigQuery's data exchange platform that lets organizations securely publish and subscribe to datasets without copying or moving data. Data providers create exchanges and listings backed by BigQuery datasets, while subscribers link to these listings to query shared data directly, with providers retaining full control over access and pricing.

Must-know

  • A linked dataset created by a subscriber is read-only and does not incur storage costs for the subscriber, only query (compute) costs, which are billed to the subscriber's project.
  • Data providers can revoke access at any time by removing a subscriber's linked dataset access, and can update the source dataset with changes automatically reflected to all subscribers.
  • Exchanges can be public (discoverable by anyone) or private (shared only with specific projects, organizations, or via IAM permissions), and listings can require subscriber approval before granting access.
  • Analytics Hub supports both free and commercial (paid) data sharing, with Google Cloud Marketplace integration enabling billing for commercial listings.
  • IAM roles specific to Analytics Hub (e.g., Analytics Hub Admin, Analytics Hub Data Publisher, Analytics Hub Subscriber) control who can create exchanges, publish listings, or subscribe to them.
  • Because linked datasets reference the original data in place, row-level and column-level security policies (e.g., authorized views, BigQuery data masking) applied on the source dataset are enforced for subscribers as well.
